Gene Hennen, Owner and General Contractor

Gene Hennen brings over 37 years of professional general contracting experience to every project he takes.

“My guiding principles for approaching a project are to be completely honest and forthright; to discover what is really important to the client; and to identify the key difficulties and make a plan to overcome them.”

Gene grew up in Madison Wisconsin surrounded by the energy and creativity of building. His father, who was a doctor, had a woodworking hobby. He remodeled their house, made furniture and cabinets, boat ramps, and swings.  “I was his helper, whenever he could catch me. Also, he helped me buy a house in Madison when I was 19 that I lived in and worked on. I lived in one room and rented out the rest.  My uncle, who was a contractor, helped build the first house our family had.  My first memory at age three was riding in the back of my uncle’s pickup eating Ritz Crackers.”

At University of Wisconsin, Madison Gene studied the humanities, majoring in history and philosophy.  After graduating from UW Madison he moved to California to attend graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley in Latin American History, but dropped out due to a dislike for academia.  “I then attended Laney College with classes in carpentry and cabinet making, met two architects who were also builders, became a partner with one of them and began building houses.”

“I love this work because the inevitable hassles are easily overwhelmed by the satisfaction and pride in the finished product. Also, every project is different from the previous one and challenging, so it is possible to learn something from everyone.”

Gene lived and worked in California for 17 years.  Then in 1993, he and his wife, Kathy, were looking for a change.  “Kathy had lived on O‘ahu and had good memories, so we visited the Big Island a few times, liked the family feeling and friendly people, and made the move.   I feel committed to friends and community, love the raw nature that is so close us at all times, and am committed to doing something positive here.”
